What is Micro needling?
Micro needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the skin’s appearance by stimulating its natural healing processes. This treatment involves the use of fine needles to create tiny, controlled punctures in the skin’s surface.
How Does Micro needling Work?
The micro needling device, often a derma roller or a pen with fine needles, is gently rolled or pressed across the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the skin’s repair mechanisms, prompting the production of new collagen and elastin. This natural response results in firmer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin. The entire process typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the area being treated.
Benefits of Micro needling
Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles: By stimulating collagen production, micro needling helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, providing a more youthful appearance.
Improves Skin Texture and Tone: The procedure helps to even out skin tone and texture, making your complexion look more radiant and balanced.
Minimizes Scars and Stretch Marks: Micro needling can significantly reduce the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks.
Reduces Hyperpigmentation and Sun Damage: It can help diminish dark spots and pigmentation issues caused by sun exposure and aging.
Enhances Product Absorption: The micro-channels created during micro needling allow skincare products to penetrate deeper into the skin, maximizing their effectiveness.
Potential Side Effects
While micro needling is generally safe for most skin types, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects:
Redness and Swelling: Temporary redness and swelling are common immediately after the procedure but usually subside within a few days.
Minor Bleeding and Bruising: Some patients may experience minor bleeding or bruising, especially if the needles penetrate deeper layers of the skin.
Dryness and Flaking: The skin may feel dry and start to flake as it heals, revealing fresh, new skin underneath.
Infection: As with any procedure involving needles, there’s a small risk of infection if proper aftercare isn’t followed.
Who should avoid micro needling?
Micro needling is safe for all skin types. When scheduling my appointment, I was advised that pregnant and breastfeeding women should not get micro needled since they cannot use the numbing cream that is applied to the face before the treatment. It is also advised that you don’t have any open lesions such as cold sores or cystic acne, because micro needling can potentially cause a severe outbreak.
Is Micro needling Right for You?
If you’re looking for a non-surgical way to rejuvenate your skin, micro needling could be the perfect solution. Always consult with a qualified skincare professional to determine if this treatment is suitable for your specific skin concerns and needs.
